The Wauchope-Bonny Hills Surf Life Saving Club formed on October 8, 1958 and patrolled initially at Bartlett’s Beach (known as ‘Little Beach’) before moving around to its current site at Rainbow Beach (or 'Big Beach').
The Wauchope Club had actually started 30 years earlier, patrolling at Nobby’s Beach, Port Macquarie. In 1932 Wauchope and Port Macquarie clubs combined as the Hastings Club, then split. From 1934 Wauchope Club returned to patrol at Nobby’s Beach until 1937 when it closed due to lack of numbers and the impending war years. Some of the prominent members of the day included, Jack Calvin, AW Lank Bain, Earle Morcom, Harry Everingham to name a few.
Wauchope Bonny Hills SLSC’s formation committee of 1958 was: Wally Sneddon President; Bill Cavanagh Vice President; Frank Isaac Secretary; Don Monkley Treasurer; Bill Cavanagh Captain; Frank Isaac Chief Instructor. Other committee members included Denis Brunsdon, Warren Kimberley, Don Marchment, Allan Brunsdon, Ion King, Bob Marchment, John Graham, Allan Garrett while the patrons were CW McCredie, Drs N Drummond & E Thomas and Tony Simpson.
The first bronze squad of the new club – on February 8, 1958 included Don Marchment, John Ballard, Robert Ballard, Richard McCredie, James Ford, Denis Brunsdon, Thomas Hillard (instructor), Barry Griffith, Robert Logan, Bill Cavanagh, Alan Garrett, Warren Kimberley and Don Monkley.
The club continued to patrol ‘Little Beach’ from 1958 to 1960 when it was decided (after much argument) to move around to ‘ Big Beach’ because of the lack of space for carnivals and future club activities.
Work on a new clubhouse was started in 1962 and was build entirely with money raised in the Wauchope community by Wauchope-Bonny Hills SLSC members. Some of the fundraisers included a 'Buy-a-Brick' campaign, raffles and donations.
The clubhouse is now well and truly beyond its use-by date and the club membership has been in long consultation with Port Macquarie Hastings Council over the clubhouse and its future.
Throughout its history, the club has been fortunate to record no fatalities while Wauchope Bonny Hills SLSC members have been patrolling.
